SAN DIEGO -- Excimer light source supplier Cymer Inc. here today reported a 67% increase in revenues to $98.4 million in the third quarter compared to $58.9 million in the period last year. Cymer's net income jumped to $18.1 million compared to $3.5 million in the quarter last year.
Cymer's ELS-6000 KrF (krypton fluoride) light source accounted for 77% of systems shipped in the third quarter. "We shipped 128 system revenue units in the third quarter compared to 112 in the second quarter," said Bob Akins, chairman and chief executive officer of the Cymer. "During the third quarter, 101 Cymer light sources were installed at chip makers, bringing our year-to-date market share for 2000 to approximately 81%. As of Sept. 30, 2000, the number of Cymer light sources at chip makers totaled 1,234."
Cymer's earnings per share of $0.58 in the third quarter beat Wall Street's consensus of $0.52, based on a survey of analysts by First Call/Thomson Financial. Cymer's light sources are used in deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography in wafer fabs.
Looking ahead, Cymer said it now expects system revenue unit shipments to rise 8% in the fourth quarter over third-quarter levels. The company also said it anticipates total revenues to increase 4-to-5% in the fourth quarter from the third quarter.
